The champions’ surf spots
Seignosse and its neighbour Hossegor have long been hosts to renowned surfing competitions (WQS, Challenger Series, Quiksilver Festival, ADH Open, French Championships, etc.) These events usually take place between La Gravière and La Nord – Hossegor’s big-wave spots – or in Seignosse around Les Gardians, Les Estagnots or Les Bourdaines. Whilst surfing, you might spot some of the champions who love to train at Seignosse’s surf spots: Joan Duru, Johanne Defay, Jérémie Florès, Justin Becret, Maud le Car, Pierre Rollet, Tia Zebrowski, Laurie Phipps and many others.
Surf culture is everywhere
A whole culture and local ecosystem has developed around surfing, one that lives and breathes the sport: equipment manufacturers, shapers, surf shops, surf camps, clubs… a community that’s happy to share its world and its passion.
Ideal conditions for learning to surf
Seignosse’s surf spots aren’t just for champions! Each beach has sandbanks and distinctive waves that are perfect for beginners. Surf schools set up shop in beach huts between April and October, but there are also independent and itinerant instructors. Choose the option that suits you best:
- private lessons for highly personalised guidance
- group lessons for the camaraderie and energy of the group
- week-longintensive courses to make faster progress
Finally, bear in mind that surfing is a sport that requires you to adapt to the ocean; it takes tenacity, consistency and humility, but the wonderful sensation of gliding along comes very quickly, along with that visceral need to become one with the ocean – a feeling that will stay with you forever! A good surfer is a respectful surfer: someone who doesn’t overestimate their ability, who follows the rules, who remains cautious in all conditions and looks out for others.
