Natural sites

Here are our suggestions for natural sites to visit in Seignosse and the surrounding area. There are three nature reserves in our area: the Étang Noir, the Courant d’Huchet and the Marais d’Orx. These offer three very different yet complementary experiences, each with surprising landscapes and atmospheres. Be sure to visit the visitor centres, the interpretive displays, and take advantage of the many guided tours led by passionate nature guides.

Further afield, about an hour and a half’s drive away, other stunning sites await you in the Basque Country, including the unmissable Train de la Rhune, which will take you up to an altitude of 1,000 metres above the ocean.

The Black Pond Nature Reserve

A 45-minute walk along a boardwalk allows you to explore the 52 hectares of protected wetlands. The Nature Reserve is home to habitats typical of the Landes region: swamp forest, peat bog, pond… and over 200 plant species. The Étang Noir, which gives the reserve its name, is characterised by its deep waters and muddy bed. The swamp forest that surrounds it provides dense shade, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the place. At the end of the footbridge, there is a breathtaking view of the Étang Noir. Keep your eyes peeled and walk in silence – you might just spot some otters or a European pond turtle! The site is a refuge for many migratory birds, as well as providing a year-round home for our amphibian friends and beautiful dragonflies.

The Orx Marshes

The Marais d’Orx is a bird sanctuary situated in Labenne.

Two walking trails, one of which is dotted with various observation points, will lead you to stunning, unobstructed views of the marsh. Here, discover a wealth of flora and fauna for a day of exploration and observation.

The Huchet Stream

Starting at the Etang de Léon, the Courant d’Huchet winds its way through the forest just behind the dune before flowing into the ocean at Moliets’ Central Beach.

You can explore the ‘Little Amazon of the Landes’ by boat with the boatmen, who will tell you the story of the Courant, or by following the various walking trails.
